The Symbolic Ideal
At one time the symbolic ideal of America was a melting pot (blended together as one people, more or less); then, as multiculturalism took root, the ideal became a tossed salad, or a gumbo (still mixed together but maintaining some individual aspects); now, as identity politics ascends, the ideal seems to have transformed into something closer to a TV dinner, or a school lunch (separated into exclusive categories, defined by difference).
